“You can be a rapper and still be a rock star, it’s about how you perceive yourself and the way you deliver a message through your music”
In 2021 alone, singer-songwriter Finn Askew’s artistic vision bled into two bodies of work that resemble the mastery and confidence of an industry heavyweight. At 20 years old, hailing from Somerset, his style is a far cry from his country roots. In typical Gen-Z style, Finn is not one to be put within an easily definable box and his genre-bending sound experiments with everything from R&B, emo-rock, pop, indie and everything in between. Of his second EP the rising star told NME “You’ve got rap, hip-hop, jazz, ballads…The style is still just a fusion of a few things, how I wanted it to be”.
Citing the likes of XXXTentacion, Lil Peep and Juice WRLD, alongside Nirvana and The Beach Boys as his musical influences, Finn’s eclectic taste resonates throughout his varied discography. Such variety makes it hard to pin his music to one genre and this versatility is what makes him so exciting as an artist. Of his style, Finn says “I don’t ever want to be defined by one genre… It’s really important that you don’t put yourself in a box”.
Finn’s viral track ‘Roses’, secured him an expansive following within the Asian market after K-Pop star Taeyong played the song to his millions of followers on a live stream. Overnight, Finn’s popularity within countries including Thailand and Korea began to grow and now the track has over 51-million views on YouTube and 20-million Spotify streams. In 2022 he hopes to visit Asia for festivals and headline shows.
Named by VevoDSCVR and NME as one to watch, Finn Askew’s rising star is inevitable. With an exciting year of festivals and shows ahead plus past studio sessions with the likes of Jonny Coffer (Beyoncé), Invisible Men (Miley Cyrus), and Kid Harpoon (Harry Styles) you know Finn’s status in the industry is firmly cemented.
